Homemade Body Scrub

The basic ratio is 1 part oil to 2 parts sugar or salt. Although it all depends on the type of scrub you want; for a more exfoliating scrub, use less oil (just enough so when you grab some with your hands, it will clump and stay together).

For a more moisturizing scrub, use the full amount of oil (for a liquidy slushy-like consistency). The oil will separate out after sitting a while, so just stir with a spoon before using.

Mix scrubs together and store in glass or plastic jars. For gift-giving, download our free beautiful labels, and attach a mini wooden spoon with a pretty ribbon:

Types of Carrier Oil

  • Sweet almond oil
  • Jojoba, grapeseed oil
  • Olive oil
  • Coconut oil (will harden at room temperature)
  • Safflower oil
  • Mineral oil
  • Can also replace some of the oil with Vitamin E oil for added moisturizing benefits

There is really no exact measurements when creating body scrubs. Add more or less scents depending on what you want the dominant ‘top-note’ to be. For the consistency, slowly add in the oil, stirring as you go until you get the thickness you want.

Remember to leave a few inches of headroom at the top of the jar, so you can stir it without the mixture spilling over the sides.

Tips When Using Body Scrubs

  • Avoid using salt scrubs on broken, irritated or freshly shaved skin, as the salt will sting.
  • Always apply to skin moistened with warm or tepid water, as this opens the pores and allows the healing ingredients to penetrate the skin more deeply.
  • For safety, remember to wash the tub bottom when done to remove the slippery film of oil that accumulates.
