Hoisin Sauce

Black bean paste or miso paste is sometimes hard to find in a regular grocery store, so our first version has ingredients that are readily available and could already be in your pantry.

Version 1 (makes about 1/2 cup)
- 4 Tbsp GF soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp peanut butter
- 2 Tbsp molasses
- 2 tsp rice vinegar
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 2 tsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp Siracha or other GF hot sauce
- 1/8 tsp pepper
- 1/4 tsp mustard powder
- 1/8 tsp onion powder
Version 2 (makes about 1 cup)
- 1 Tbsp oil of your choice
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 1/2 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
- 1/2 cup red miso paste
- 1/2 cup maple syrup
- 2 Tbsp rice vinegar
Version 3 (makes about 1 cup)
- 6 Tbsp dark brown sugar
- 3 Tbsp black bean paste
- 3 Tbsp water
- 2 Tbsp GF soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp agave or honey
- 4 tsp rice vinegar
- 1/2 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
- 1/2 tsp sesame paste
- 1/4 tsp Sriracha or other GF hot sauce
For all versions, combine all ingredients in a small sauce pan and bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes.
Allow to cool, then store in a sealable jar in the fridge for up to 4 days.
